This quote beautifully summarises the Course’s basic message. God is real, and we are still at home in Him. Moreover what we think of as our life as a body, is nothing more than a meaningless dream of being separated from Him- an impossible situation to be sure. This not only means that we can wake up to our true life in God’s perfect love, but that it is also inevitable we will. And sometimes, simply remembering this- that our awakening to a love indescribable, a peace unshakeable, and a joy uncontainable, is inevitable- can be enough to get us through the difficult parts of our journey with this incredible teaching.
The other happy aspect to this message is that if our lives here are nothing but made-up dreams, this must mean that there’s nothing to be afraid of. This isn’t to imply that the world won’t offer us plenty of evidence of just how terrifying a place this can be- it will. Just watch the news if you’re somehow missing glimpses of this in your own life. Rather, the respite lies in recognising that seemingly horrible and scary situations don’t have to be experienced as terrifying if we can remember that its only dream images we ever see, and they’re only ever imbued with the meaning we gave them.
Now if you’re anything like me and know what it’s like to hit ‘rock-bottom’ in some way, perhaps you too can appreciate just how deliciously sweet these words are.
